Last night on ABC's Cougar Town, Jules (Courteney Cox-Arquette) was trying to entice her neighbor, her ex-husband, and her best friend's husband to come join her barbecue instead of sitting in her neighbor's den, watching Rudy aka "the ultimate guy movie ever." She said she would put on The Shawshank Redemption, which does run a tight race when it comes to the best guy movie (or the best movie in general, in my not so humble opinion). But she one-upped her neighbor by promising not just the DVD but "the ultimate Shawshank experience."
Now, I have attended such fan "experiences" before. Just last month, you might remember my article about the quote-a-long/sing-a-long for my favorite film from my childhood, Troop Beverly Hills. But I have to admit, I was wary about any kind of experience for a film that is set in a prison. But Michael McDonald (who directed this particular Cougar Town episode) delivered more than I could have imagined.
Jules set up a plastic tube in her backyard, through which the guys could crawl, as if they were escaping prison through that piping tunnel. She even did her best Morgan Freeman to narrate the journey, which had them spilling out into her pool, over which she stood with a garden hose, making it "rain" on them. I promise you the clip is much better than my explanation, so see for yourself:
So now I'm intrigued: what other movies would do well from having some sort of "experience," quoting party, ride (ala the ET ride that was once at Universal Studios or the Jurassic Park one that is there now), or otherwise attached? When I was younger, I desperately wanted to attend some sort of theme park/real camp version of Camp Nowhere, where I could judge mud Olympics and build an obstacle course for a fake army camp. But setting something up in your own backyard is genius, and if I had a backyard, this would be my next party. Now all I need are your suggestions for what movies to have in play!
