30 Days of Christmas: 'Modern Family'...

Modern Family has only aired one Christmas show so far since last year was its first year on-air. But already their one show ranks higher on the list of must-see holiday shows for doing so completely cleverly while still keeping some conventions alive.

In “Undeck the Halls”, the Dunphy clan dons ridiculously ugly sweaters to video-chat with their out-of-state family members and then decides to cancel Christmas because none of the kids will confess to burning a hole in the armrest of the couch.

Meanwhile, Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) is bitter over getting kicked out of a caroling group who just keep showing up everywhere, Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) gets the mall Santa fired, and Jay (Ed O’Neill) has a hard time letting go of his long-standing traditions to incorporate some of his new family’s.

My Life, Made Possible by Pop Culture
doesn’t know if “Innocente” is actually a Colombian tradition (I’m thinking not), but due to how much fun the Pritchett-Delgado clan has with it, it is about to become one in my household!

Even when I was a kid, Christmas at home was always small and low-key. I’d usually have opened my presents weeks earlier (and re-wrapped them so my mother didn’t know that I had) and then just wake up early to eat cookies and watch the parade. Nowadays, I wake up early to eat cookies, watch the parade, and attempt to get Madison to open his own presents. So it’s nice to have a family, even if a fictional one, to have around and make it feel like the house is fuller. It’s my own little weird tradition.
