Pee Wee's Playhouse was not a show my parents allowed me to watch growing up in the eighties, so while it became a classic to most of my generation, I was not introduced to its ridiculous fun until years after it was appropriate for me to giggle as much as I did over things like giant underpants on a grown man's head.
Similarly, its 1988 Christmas special was not a benchmark in my childhood, but still it feels like it was made for me. After all, Pee Wee creates his own unique holiday traditions, and his letter to Santa was over a mile long! He sings all the usual carols and spends his holiday break hanging out with cool celebrities, a veritable dream come true, all while spreading the message that this is the time of year to give back.
Of course, the fact that his list was so long, if he was granted everything on it there would be no more presents for the actual kids in the world puts a slight damper on his plans, but he gets a chance to put his money where his mouth is, so to speak, and do some good for a lot of others!
