Last week Marcel Vigneron and I chatted for a bit about his new Syfy reality cooking show Marcel's Quantum Kitchen (interview coming soon to my Examiner page). As someone who runs his own technique-infused catering company that often works kids' parties, of course it came up that he is on a mission to open people's eyes to new and unique ways to eat some classic dishes. And while I thought kids might not be the best "test" audience for that, Vigneron disagreed, saying that because what he does is often so much like a magic show, they are actually the perfect clients. After all, if he can get them to try something new and like it, then he has really accomplished something.
"When I was growing up I didn’t really like green things," Vigernon said. "I was allergic to vegetables, like most kids are, and it wasn’t until I went to a farmer’s market and had a really fresh green bean or a properly cooked piece of broccoli that I was like “Man, this is delicious'."
I almost didn't have the heart to tell him I still don't like green vegetables. Almost. I ended up admitting it because, really, if I want my interviewees to be open and honest with me, I have to offer the same. So I explained my aversion to all things green, especially if they're leafy, and let him try to convince me of otherwise. After all, watching him try to make mozzarella balloons has definitely given me a new appreciation of the whimsy of cheese! So I must admit, he certainly has the imagination and skills to get me to try to expand my palate a bit.
Marcel's Quantum Kitchen won't premiere until next Tuesday night at 10pm, but My Life, Made Possible by Pop Culture is offering a giveaway for a promotional tee-shirt from the show. You can wear it while you attempt your own culinary creations or just when you're looking for creative inspiration in general. Want to win? Leave a comment below (and/or Tweet me) with a classic dish on which you'd like to see Vigneron put his own spin on the show.
You can enter as many times as you want between now and noon PT on Monday, March 20th. Each separate comment and Tweet count as an additional entry. Only U.S. residents are eligible for this giveaway.
And be sure to stay tuned for my feature interview with Vigneron just prior to the premiere of Marcel's Quantum Kitchen, which follows the celebrity chef as he is hired by a demanding client and asked to produce and pull off extraordinary dishes and celebrations. Based on the clients’ requests, Vigneron will have to dream up a menu and a spectacular execution of his ideas. He taps into the depths of his imagination and culinary talents to brainstorm everything from the decor to a delicious menu that emphasizes his unparalleled brand of molecular gastronomy. Some of the inventive dishes he will create in the series include a flaming prawn that literally ignites at the dinner table to a futuristic flying pizza, a form-mimicked watermelon cube that looks, smells, and tastes like tuna, and a rice tablet that causes the diner's mouth to billow smoke when it's eaten.
