Priests and nuns are authority figures in religion, but their gospel is not their own; they are serving the word of a being they can't even prove exists. Yet, they make severe rules that must be followed or else risk reaping torturous consequences. Similarly, the doctor of this mental institution for the clinically and criminally insane, we imagine, was once renowned for his expertise but he enjoyed experimenting too much; he let the idea of "healing hands" take over, and he decided he knew best. He was wrong, of course, so now he has been banished to "treat" only the people that society has thrown away. The way American Horror Story: Asylum plays with power, even from the pilot episode is fascinating. Much more that the shock value of anything bloody or gorier or the loud, screechy noises that replace mere bumps in the night, it is the psychological horror about this series that is most intriguing and compelling. The pilot episode sets up a lot of strong statements on Ryan Murphy's feelings on the subject of religion and politics and what is "right or wrong," which is an interesting statement in and of itself. After all, he is just a man who has been given extraordinary power himself of late-- not just in creating and running this show, but also the three others currently on air in his name... [MORE]
