From LA Examiner: James Purefoy and Shawn Ashmore Dissect 'The Following'...

As Joe Carroll, The Following's notorious schoolteacher-turned-serial killer, James Purefoy has to charm and inspire, not instill fear. He has to be a chameleon, and a little bit of an actor himself, giving those around him not only what they want but what they need. The success of making Carroll as enigmatic as he has to be in order for the story to work should be a scary thought, though, because that means some real life audiences may find themselves caught under Carroll's spell, too, even if not fully sympathizing with his heinous actions... The Following has amassed a group of people hanging on serial killer Joe Carroll's (James Purefoy) every word, joining in his mission, and acting out their own violent fantasies to follow in his footsteps. He has given them the courage to be the people they want to be, but he has also given them the tools: he was their teacher, and they are imparting his lessons in their own lives. But what about Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon)? Through his book about capturing Carroll, he, too, is a teacher of sorts, laying out a plan of attack on the nation's criminals.
