Celebuzz 'The Carrie Diaries' Preview: Brendan Dooling Talks About Walt's "Path of Self-Discovery"...

From the start of The CW's The Carrie Diaries, series executive producer Amy Harris introduced the juxtaposition of quote-unquote "normal teenage life" with a sense of experiences that are actually much more grown-up in order to showcase the cusp on which these characters are perched. When Carrie (AnnaSophia Robb) found herself dancing between two gay guys in a New York City club, being told that she probably does know someone who is gay, she just has to know what signs to look for, the show cut to Walt (Brendan Dooling), who is a great dresser and spends a great deal of time admiring Rob Lowe. But one's teenage years are for figuring out who you are-- and sexuality comes along with that. Just because the audience, and now Carrie, may be predisposed to thinking Walt is gay does not mean the character himself will have such a revelation immediately.

"He doesn’t know [that he's gay], and he’s not comfortable with sharing the fact that he doesn’t know. He is hiding things from people, but it’s not the fact that he is gay," Dooling said.

"He's on a path of self-discovery. I think that just makes me, as an actor, more excited to do the role justice. Obviously there are nerves there because people who have actually lived this will be able to determine whether or not I’m doing the best job, but it’s not something that’s constantly at the forefront of my mind. I'm interested in the challenge as an actor."
