One of the layers to Kevin Williamson's The Following that we personally love so much is how each individual "follower" of Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) is projecting what they want and need onto Joe and each other in order to fill a void in their lives. It's a bit meta, in a way, because any active television audience projects their own wants and needs onto the characters in the shows they consume in order to get more out of them.
