From LA Examiner: 'Switched at Birth' "What If?" Post-Mortems...



When a television drama ends an episode with a character collapsed on the floor and another character administering CPR while awaiting an ambulance, it's usually a bad sign. Not necessarily for that character-- often he or she will pull out of it after a lengthy and tumultuous hospital stay-- but for the story, which detours into soapier territory than usual, as characters gather to fret over their beloved's bedside. Thankfully, though, ABC Family's Switched at Birth did not do that when Regina (Constance Marie) found John (D.W. Moffett) on the floor in his kitchen after a nasty fight where he admitted to not trusting her. And even better yet, instead of pushing John and Moffett to the side for awhile to deal with the other characters reacting to what had just happened to him, the show actually pushed him to the center by diving into his "What if?" close-to-worst-case scenario in his coma-laden mind... ABC Family's Switched at Birth just delivered an alternate-reality "What if?" episode in which Regina (Constance Marie) came forward, and it changed the course of how Daphne (Katie Leclerc) and Bay (Vanessa Marano) learned about the switch and were brought up. The circumstances of their lives were very different, and in many ways their personalities reflected that, but there was one key moment that didn't have to come up at all, and yet the show found it important to point out: Bay and Emmett (Sean Berdy) still met and began to bond...
